Hand-painted Arita/Hasami hexagonal demitasse cup & saucer in the 花絵間取綠 Hana-e Madori Midori ("Floral-Picture Reservation, Green") pattern. Green overglaze rim wash + sumi-ink brushwork reservations + orange-red akae florets + turquoise/yellow/cobalt enamel dot accents on the characteristic iron-spot-speckled Arita-Hasami border-kiln porcelain body. Original navy-blue gift box with 美術 有田焼 (Bijutsu Arita-yaki) certification sticker on saucer underside.
Workshop & tradition
Arita (有田焼) and Hasami (波佐見焼) are two of Japan's most prestigious porcelain traditions — both designated 経済産業大臣指定伝統的工芸品 (Traditional Crafts) — produced in neighbouring towns on the Saga–Nagasaki border. Many border-region kilns produce ware that is classified as both, and this set is one of those: a hand-painted hexagonal demitasse co-classified as Arita/Hasami porcelain.
Pattern & design
The pattern name 花絵間取綠 breaks down as: 花絵 (hana-e, "floral picture") + 間取 (madori, the painter's reservation or framed window inside which the decoration sits) + 綠 (midori, green — the colour that anchors the rim wash). The hexagonal cup form lends itself naturally to madori: each of the six panels of the cup, and each segment of the saucer, becomes its own small painted scene.
Use cases
- Espresso / strong-brew coffee service (100 mL demitasse capacity)
- Japanese sencha or genmaicha tea in a small portion
- Display-as-art: the hexagonal facets read beautifully on an open shelf
- Gift: wedding, anniversary, corporate executive, housewarming
FAQ
What is a demitasse? A demitasse is a small "half-cup" — typically 60–100 mL — used in Europe for espresso and in Japan for strong tea or coffee. This piece is 100 mL.
Arita or Hasami? Both. The kiln sits in the Saga–Nagasaki border region where Arita-cho and Hasami-cho meet, and the production is classified as both Arita-yaki and Hasami-yaki traditions.
Is it microwave or dishwasher safe? Not confirmed. We recommend hand-wash only with mild soap and lukewarm water to preserve the hand-painted overglaze decoration.

Care instructions
Care instructions
Hand-wash only with mild soap and lukewarm water; air-dry with soft cotton. Avoid abrasive sponges and harsh detergents. Avoid sudden temperature changes. No microwave or dishwasher — not confirmed by supplier; hand-wash and hand-warm preparation only is recommended for hand-painted Arita overglaze pieces.
The light iron-spot speckle through the porcelain body is intentional and characteristic of Arita-Hasami border-kiln production — it is part of the surface, not a defect.
