Iroe Yū Kutani matcha chawan, Hana series

This hand-thrown stoneware chawan by Iroe Kōbō Yū places a dense floral reserve across one half of a grey, iron-flecked bowl. Chrysanthemum, dianthus, plum, sakura, forget-me-not, and green leaves are painted in iroe overglaze colour; the other half and the interior retain the quieter speckled glaze. A red 遊 seal marks the foot.

Painted colour against grey glaze

Kutani ware is known for expressive overglaze colour, and colour painting is central to the Yū workshop’s identity. This bowl does not cover the entire form. The floral panel and unpainted grey glaze remain visibly separate, allowing the brushwork, clay surface, and iron speckle to share the bowl without forcing them into one finish.

In use

The open form leaves room for a bamboo chasen, making it suitable for preparing matcha. It can also serve loose-leaf tea or a small kobachi portion such as fruit, pickles, dessert, or a side dish.

Care instructions

Hand-wash ONLY with mild detergent and a soft sponge.

Do NOT use the dishwasher — alkaline detergent strips overglaze 色絵 (iroe) enamels.

Do NOT use the microwave (manufacturer-confirmation not provided for either microwave or dishwasher safety).

Avoid sudden temperature changes (do not pour boiling water onto a cold bowl).

Dry thoroughly before storing back in the kiribako.

Because each piece is hand-thrown and hand-painted, slight variations in glaze tone, iron-fleck pattern, brush stroke placement, and rim asymmetry are inherent to the workshop's wabi-sabi aesthetic — they are not defects.

Returns and exchanges are accepted within 30 days of delivery for eligible items. For a standard return or exchange, return shipping is the buyer's responsibility, and items must be returned in their original condition and packaging.

色絵工房 遊 · Ishikawa

Iroe Kōbō Yū (色絵工房 遊 'Colour-Painting Workshop Yū') is a named Kutani-yaki workshop in Ishikawa Prefecture. Distinguished by a red 遊 foot seal and a wabi-sabi grey body palette beneath iroe overglaze decoration. Signature series: Hidamari (ひだまり sunny-spot cats) and Hana (花 floral). Body is stoneware (not porcelain — verified per photo evidence).
