Two quail stand low among stems and orange sprays around this Arita porcelain coffee cup, painted in iron red, turquoise, blue and yellow on a white ground. The same pair reappears on the saucer, and the cup sits on a raised foot.

The quail design (鶉 uzura) is painted in the Kakiemon style, with open space left around the birds and the branches. Each cup is painted by hand, so brushwork and colour vary a little from piece to piece.

At 190 ml the cup is a compact size for coffee or tea. It arrives in a printed gift box.
