Honkin hanazume Kutani cup and saucer

Flowers cover the whole outer wall of this Kutani cup, packed edge to edge over a ground of fine gold hatching: large yellow blossoms with gilded veins, chrysanthemum-like white flowers and small five-petal white flowers in raised decoration, teal and violet rosettes, and a pair of butterflies in magenta and blue. That packed-flower idiom is called hanazume, and honkin (本金) means the gilding is real gold.

The handle is a gold-covered loop; the body is ceramic, not solid metal. The saucer stays plain white on both faces with a narrow gold rim band, so the cup carries the pattern.

Made in Japan. Supplied in its keshobako gift box.
