A blue thrush perches above a branch of red berries on this leaf-shaped porcelain plate, while a smaller orange bird appears below. Each motif is painted by hand, so the brushwork and placement vary slightly from piece to piece.

Made in Japan by Toubou Ao (陶房青) in the Hasami porcelain tradition. At 15.5 cm long it sits between a small plate and a side plate, and works for soy sauce, pickles, wagashi or a small side dish.

This plate belongs to Toubou Ao's Tsugumi bird series.
