When choosing a gift for a wedding in Japan, first check the couple’s plans and whether you are attending. Cash gifts are customary at many receptions; a physical gift can be a separate gesture or something agreed with the couple. These ceramic and glass ideas focus on objects they can use together.
Choosing an object for two? Start with their usual drink or meal, then compare set contents and packaging. See available wedding and anniversary gifts.
Why paired ceramics suit a wedding
Meoto (夫婦, “married couple”) sets pair related cups or bowls, sometimes in different sizes. They can make a thoughtful wedding or anniversary gift. Choose the capacities and colours that suit both people rather than assigning them by gender.

Choosing a gift they will use
Check the product pages for current prices, available options, and included boxes. Presentation packaging varies by item.
Start with how they spend time together
- Tea or coffee each morning: compare the boxed Kutani bird-and-blossom mug pair, with a separate colour for each person.
- Serving leaf tea: compare the Arita Takarazukushi teapot-and-two-cup set in a wooden presentation box; check its capacity and strainer details.
- Cooking together: choose a donabe only after checking the recipient’s stove and the pot’s capacity.

Cups or glasses for two
Compare the Kutani wine-cup pair from Bizan kiln with the Edo Kiriko cut-glass pair in red and blue. They offer different materials and decorative effects for a shared drink; choose by both recipients’ preferences.
A tea set
The Arita Takarazukushi tea set pairs a side-handle teapot with two cups. Takarazukushi (宝尽くし) is an auspicious treasure motif. Small treasure motifs are spaced across the pale body, and fine red lines mark the cup rims and feet. The product photograph above shows the three pieces with their wooden presentation box. Our beginner's tea set guide explains the equipment and a starting recipe for sencha.

A sake set
The Kutani sake set from Eizan kiln offers a decorated server and cups. Compare its contents and care with the glass set pictured here, especially if the couple prefers chilled sake.

A donabe for shared meals
A rose-decorated donabe can suit a couple who enjoys shared cooking. Confirm its actual capacity, stove compatibility, weight, and care. A numbered size alone does not establish how many people it will serve. For a choice of capacities, compare the Ginpo Hana Mishima gas donabe, 0.9–4.0 L. For induction, see the separate Hana Mishima IH model.

Mugs for everyday use
In the Kutani mug pair, the shared bird-and-blossom pattern ties the two cups together, while green and yellow accents distinguish them. The close-up below shows the rim and interior as well as the exterior pattern. Browse the Wedding & Anniversary Gifts collection to compare other pairs.

Japanese wedding gift etiquette: the money question
If the invitation or couple’s plans do not make the gift arrangements clear, ask before buying.
Goshūgi (ご祝儀) is a congratulatory cash gift, usually presented in a shūgi-bukuro envelope for a wedding. The All Japan Ceremonial Mutual Aid Association’s wedding guidance and its 2023 survey results show that ¥30,000 was the most common amount among friends (83% of survey responses); responses for relatives varied by relationship. These are survey patterns, not a universal rule. Family expectations, region, attendance, and the couple’s arrangements matter; relatives are not simply expected to double a friend’s amount.
For a wedding, choose a shūgi-bukuro made for that occasion. Its mizuhiki (水引) paper cords may use a musubikiri knot, associated with wishes for an occasion that will not be repeated. A retieable bow carries a different meaning.

If you are attending, do not assume a physical gift replaces customary goshūgi. Check with the couple or family. If you are not attending or are sending from abroad, ask what would be welcome and arrange an object or another form of congratulations accordingly.
Gifts for a Japanese wedding anniversary
A shared interest is a useful starting point for an anniversary gift. Celebratory motifs include crane and tortoise (tsuru-kame), associated with longevity, and pine, bamboo and plum (shōchikubai). Choose a design the couple will enjoy, and explain its meaning in a short note. There is no need to match a particular ceramic style to a numbered anniversary.

Buying Japanese gifts from outside Japan
For a dated occasion, check stock, included packaging, dispatch information, and the delivery estimate for the destination before ordering. Check the shipping policy for the destination and allow for dispatch as well as transit. Tell us the occasion, destination and budget if you would like help comparing the listed pieces.
