Pine, bamboo and plum circle the rim of this blue and white serving platter, painted by hand in underglaze cobalt on Arita porcelain. Together the three plants form the shōchikubai, a motif long tied to celebrations and good wishes in Japan, and here they wrap around a plain white oval left open for the food.

The platter has a chrysanthemum-shaped rim, with fine flutes radiating towards the scalloped edge, so the brushwork rises and falls over the ridges. A double blue line frames the well, and the underside carries a painted blue mark and a gold Arita ware label.

Because the decoration is hand-painted, brush pressure and colour depth vary a little from piece to piece, and the platter you receive may differ slightly from the photographs. The outer base is left without clear glaze in the making, so faint dark spots can appear there; this is part of the process, not a flaw.

At 24 cm long, it works well for sashimi or nigiri, grilled fish, appetizers, cheese, sliced fruit, or sweets.
