A hand-painted Kutani porcelain maneki-neko from Chōhō Kiln, with Red Fuji and a crane across its glossy black body. Raised dekomori lines give the clouds, scrolling motifs and feathers a tactile finish, and the right paw is lifted in the gesture traditionally associated with inviting prosperity. ON THE PAINTING

  • Right paw raised — traditionally associated with financial prosperity
  • Red Fuji, snow-capped, ringed by fine white dots and yellow-and-blue clouds
  • A crane motif spreads across the shoulder in green, gold-coloured and coral tones
  • Raised scrolling motifs over the black ground, front and back
  • 福 (fuku, “good fortune”) on the red bib, with a gold-coloured bell at the collar
  • A red brushed mark and an impressed 九谷 mark on the base

Because each piece is painted by hand, linework and colour placement vary. Small dark specks from iron in the porcelain clay, fine surface texture, uneven density in the paler colours, and small gaps or rubbing in the gold-coloured decoration are normal for this work.

Chōhō Kiln

長峰 · Ishikawa

Chōhō (長峰, also read Nagamine) is a modern Kutani-yaki kiln in Ishikawa Prefecture known for the Hanazono (花園 flower-garden) pattern and the signature ryōte (両手 both-paws-up) maneki neko series. Distinctive technique: mori-e (盛り絵 raised-line slip) accents over overglaze enamel. Not a coin bank — hollow base only, no money slot.
