Bunzan Arita mug with raised peony decoration

This 280 ml porcelain mug by Bunzan Kiln is hand-painted in yellow and finished with raised icchin peony petals. The relief can be felt as a fine ridge across the surface. A scalloped rinka rim follows the flower shape and is brushed with gold; the interior and handle remain white.

Icchin relief and peony motif

In icchin decoration, slip is piped onto the ceramic body and remains raised after firing. Bunzan uses the technique to build the edges of the peony petals rather than leaving the flower as a flat painted image. Small shifts in line, brushwork, and gold placement reflect the hand-applied process.

The peony, or botan, has long been associated in East Asian decorative art with spring, abundance, and prosperity. Here the motif is carried as much by the mug’s texture and scalloped mouth as by its yellow colour.

Dishwasher: SAFE (confirmed 食洗機〇). Hand-wash recommended for longest gold-rim life.

Microwave: NOT SAFE (confirmed レンジ×) — the gold rim contains real metallic decoration which will spark in a microwave.

Avoid sudden temperature changes. Do not use in open flame.

Because each piece is hand-painted, slight differences in brushwork, peony placement, and gold finish are expected and part of the character of artisan Arita. Small dark spots may appear on the underside of the unglazed foot — these are an artifact of the glaze process, not flaws.

Returns / damage support

Returns and exchanges are accepted within 30 days of delivery for eligible items. For a standard return or exchange, return shipping is the buyer's responsibility, and items must be returned in their original condition and packaging.

If your item arrives damaged, defective, or significantly different from the description, please contact us as soon as possible after delivery with clear photos of the item and packaging. ZenKiln will cover the reasonable return or replacement cost where applicable.
