A compact Kutani porcelain Daruma by Miura Terutada, decorated with the traditional sanyū-mon (“Three Friends”) pattern of pine, bamboo and plum. The crisp white ground carries finely outlined motifs in muted green, yellow, red and blue, framing the Daruma’s expressive face.
Pine, bamboo and plum have long been grouped in East Asian art for their ability to endure the changing seasons. Here, the motif is treated with the delicate colour and line work associated with Kutani overglaze decoration.
