Maitokan Hana Hana Usagi cup and saucer

A low coffee cup standing on three short feet, with its matching saucer. A white rabbit with red eyes is painted on both pieces, off to one side of a yellow flower, a white flower and green leaves. This Japanese earthenware set belongs to Maitokan's Hana Hana Usagi (花花兎) line and is identified as Seto ware.

The outside of the cup and the rim of the saucer carry a mottled coral glaze, orange freckled over pink. Inside, the ground is cream. Both rims are finished with a thin brown iron line, and the cup rim is drawn into a soft wave rather than a circle. An impressed Maitokan mark sits on the unglazed underside of the saucer.

Because the pattern is painted by hand and the clay is kiln-fired, linework, colour tone and size differ a little from piece to piece. 250 ml suits coffee, cafe au lait, or tea. The three feet lift the cup clear of the saucer; lift it by the body and handle rather than by the feet.

A Japanese ceramics care card from the maker is included with the set.

Care instructions

A Japanese ceramics care card is included with the set. What it says:

Before use, soak the pieces in hot water so the earthenware takes up clean moisture; this helps reduce tea staining.

After use, wash the pieces soon with kitchen detergent, rinse in clean water, and let them dry fully before putting them away.

Do not leave them standing in water. Earthenware is absorbent, and dirty water drawn into the body causes mould, staining and odour.

If tea stains do build up, kitchen bleach may be used.

The feet and the saucer base are unglazed. Set the pieces down rather than dragging them, or they can mark a tray or table.

Microwave safe and dishwasher safe. Not for direct flame or oven use.

Returns / damage support

Returns and exchanges are accepted within 30 days of delivery for eligible items. For a standard return or exchange, return shipping is the buyer's responsibility, and items must be returned in their original condition and packaging.
