Seiji: The Jade-Green World of Japanese Celadon

Iron-bearing glaze and the firing atmosphere help produce these shades, while the clay body and glaze thickness affect the finished surface. What "seiji" actually means
In the West we call it celadon; in Japan it is seiji, written 青磁 — literally "blue-green porcelain." The name describes a family of translucent, usually pale glazes that range from a barely-there icy blue through willow and jade green to deep olive. What unites them is not a recipe so much as a chemistry: the color is produced by a small amount of iron oxide in the glaze, fired at high temperature in a reducing kiln, one deliberately starved of oxygen.
The result depends on more than iron content alone. Glaze composition, the body underneath, coating thickness, firing temperature, and atmosphere work together. This is why two glazes described as celadon can look quite different.

Celadon’s characteristic colour is associated with iron-bearing glaze fired under reducing conditions. There is no single iron percentage or kiln temperature that describes every historical or modern celadon recipe.
From Longquan to Japan: how the color traveled
Chinese celadon includes several distinct kiln traditions. Longquan in Zhejiang is especially well known for green-glazed wares: The Met’s fifteenth-century Longquan plate has carved lotus decoration beneath a celadon glaze. Its catalogue identifies the body as stoneware, a useful reminder that celadon does not always mean porcelain.
Imported Chinese celadon was admired in Japan before domestic production developed. Surviving imported wares and later Japanese works provide a way to compare forms and glaze effects without treating their histories as one continuous recipe.

“Celadon” is the European term commonly used for this family of green-glazed ceramics; seiji is the Japanese term. The name alone does not tell you the piece’s clay body, place of manufacture, or date.
Celadon in early Japanese porcelain
Japanese celadon production developed in Hizen alongside other porcelain wares. The Met’s catalogue of a Hasami celadon dish places several Hizen kilns’ early celadon output in the 1630s and 1640s. The dish itself is dated to the 1640–1650s and shows the influence of Chinese Longquan forms.
Seihakuji (青白磁), or blue-white porcelain, offers a paler comparison: its lightly tinted glaze can gather more colour in carved or recessed areas. It can be considered alongside the pure white hakuji of the previous chapter. The two styles invite close looking at the tint and depth of a largely undecorated surface.
Nabeshima and Ōkawachiyama: Japan's celadon heartland
Ōkawachiyama, in present-day Imari, Saga Prefecture, is an important centre of the Nabeshima tradition. The Imari Nabeshima ware cooperative’s history dates the domain kiln’s move there to 1675 and describes production for presentation to the shogunal family, court, and feudal lords. It identifies Nabeshima celadon alongside blue-and-white and enamelled Nabeshima as major local styles.
The domain kiln’s production ended in the early Meiji period, while local workshops continued the skills in private enterprise. Today, the Nabeshima name provides a regional and historical context; the maker and description of an individual piece tell you more about how it was made.

Reading a celadon glaze: color, crackle, and form
Celadon rewards slow looking. Because the color lives in a translucent glaze rather than on a painted surface, its depth changes with the light and with the thickness of the coat — pooling darker in carved lines and around a foot ring, thinning to near-white over a raised edge. Traditional Chinese celadons are often decorated with nothing but shaping: shallow carving or molding that lets the glaze gather in the hollows and glow more deeply there, so the "pattern" is really an event of light and shadow inside a single color.
Some celadon glazes have an expected network of fine crackle, or crazing, in the glaze layer. This is different from a crack through the ceramic body. When buying, ask whether crackle is part of the intended finish. If a new line appears, a piece leaks, or the rim feels sharp, stop using it for food or drink until its condition has been checked.

Celadon can occur on different ceramic bodies, so care should follow the individual maker’s instructions rather than the glaze name alone. What is the difference between celadon and seiji?
Celadon is the broad European term for a family of iron-bearing green and blue-green glazes and the wares carrying them. Seiji is the corresponding Japanese term. Although Japanese examples are often porcelain, celadon elsewhere can also have a stoneware body.

Seihakuji means blue-white porcelain. Its lightly tinted glaze can appear almost white on raised areas and more blue-green where it gathers. It is a related visual comparison for celadon, rather than evidence of a universal Japanese preference for paler wares.
Does the crackle in celadon mean it is damaged?
Not necessarily. Some celadon glazes intentionally have fine crackle in the glaze layer. A new crack, a line continuing through the body, leakage, or a sharp edge needs separate assessment. Follow the maker’s description and stop using a suspect piece for food or drink until checked.
Why was celadon so hard for Japanese potters to make?
Celadon requires control of glaze composition, application, and firing atmosphere to obtain the desired colour. Difficulty and rejection rates vary by workshop and period. The colour and finish of the completed piece are best understood alongside its maker’s own account of the process.
