Yuzuriha Banko and Seto donabe, 8-gō

This donabe by Kōbō Yuzuriha pairs a Banko-yaki cooking body from Mie Prefecture with a hand-painted Seto-yaki lid from Aichi. The coral-pink lid belongs to the workshop’s Saikomon line and is circled by a white-and-yellow daisy-chain pattern. At approximately 25.7 cm across, the 8-gō size serves 3–4 people. The series is now discontinued; this pot is from the final stock.

Maker: Kōbō Yuzuriha (工房「ゆずりは」)
Body: Banko-yaki clay, Mie Prefecture
Lid: hand-painted Seto-yaki, Aichi Prefecture
Size: 8-gō, approx. 25.7 cm diameter × 16.8 cm tall, 2.9 L
Serves: 3–4 people

Made for shared cooking

The heat-resistant Banko body is intended for cooking, while the white Seto lid provides a suitable surface for Yuzuriha’s overglaze decoration. Bring the pot to the table for nabemono, sukiyaki, simmered vegetables, stews, or donabe rice; the painted lid remains part of the setting between servings.

Like most donabe, the glazed surface carries fine crazing-like lines called kannyu (貫入). They are part of how the ware is made, not a flaw, and the hand-painted pattern shifts a little from pot to pot.

Heat-source compatibility

Direct gas flame Yes. The included care card provides flame precautions.
Oven Yes. Marked oven-safe on the included Japanese care card.
Microwave Not specified. Follow the included Japanese care card.
Induction (IH) Not for induction cooktops.

Before first use

Season the new donabe before cooking by simmering diluted rice porridge over low gas heat for about one hour, then let it cool and dry fully. This traditional okayū narashi treatment helps prepare the unglazed clay for regular use. Follow the included care card if its instructions differ.
