A small piece of Japanese summer for the window, the entryway, or a sheltered corner of the porch, and a kawaii version of the household luck charm. This Shiba Inu parent-and-puppy furin (Japanese wind chime) is from Yakushigama's わんこ日和 (Wanko Biyori, "Dog Day") summer series: a sitting-pose parent Shiba hangs above a smaller puppy on a red braided cord, and a cream-and-blue washi tanzaku catches the breeze below, pulling the clapper so the parent bell rings with a soft, clear summer tone. The parent wears a ceremonial collar with the 福 (fuku, good fortune) kanji framed in white karakusa scroll-vine, the same auspicious vocabulary you find on maneki neko and daruma. The puppy simply rides along below, which is most of the charm.

Karakusa, the endless vine around the collar, has long stood for a line that keeps going, which is a fair thing to paint on a parent and a child. Yakushigama paints the faces one at a time, and the expression shifts a little from one dog to the next.

A Shiba owner is the easy answer. The reading people miss is a parent and a child on one cord, which lands just as well for a new baby, a first Mother's Day, or a housewarming.

Care instructions

Display indoors or in a sheltered outdoor area; bring inside during heavy rain to protect the washi-paper tanzaku.

Wipe the ceramic with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh detergents that could affect the overglaze paint.

Replace the washi-paper tanzaku if it becomes weathered. Handle the ceramic body and cord gently.
