Kutani Maneki Neko, Both Paws Up — Chōhō Kiln "Hanazono" (Flower Garden) Lucky Cat 12cm

A hand-painted Kutani-yaki lucky cat figurine by Chōhō Kiln (九谷 長峰; the kanji is also read Nagamine) in Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture — the historical heart of Kutani-yaki.

The both-paws-raised form

The familiar one-paw maneki neko comes in two well-known variants: the right paw raised "calls in good fortune (福)" and the left paw raised "calls in customers (商売繁盛)." The both-paws-up version pictured here brings the two together — read in shop culture as inviting both flows at once, a small gesture that suits a new business, a new home, or a desk that could use a little more luck.

The "Hanazono" (Flower Garden) decoration

Around the cat's body, Chōhō Kiln has piped the outlines of a flower garden in raised slip — a Kutani technique called 盛り絵 (mori-e) — and filled them with overglaze enamel:

  • Pink rose on the back
  • Orange peony / chrysanthemum medallions on the sides
  • Yellow daisy and blue chrysanthemum rosette
  • Green leaves and white dots scattered across the white porcelain body
  • A pale-blue dotted collar with a small gold bell at the throat, tied at the back with a matching blue bow

The base is signed 九谷 長峰 in red brush, with the kiln's raised relief mark — visible in the bottom photo.

Size and use

Compact at W 7 × D 7 × H 12 cm (≈ 2.76 × 2.76 × 4.72 in), the figurine fits an entryway shelf, a tea-table corner, a shop counter, or a desk shelf. Hollow inside (kiln-firing standard) — not a coin bank; there is no money slot.

Chōhō (長峰, also read Nagamine) is a modern Kutani-yaki kiln in Ishikawa Prefecture known for the Hanazono (花園 flower-garden) pattern and the signature ryōte (両手 both-paws-up) maneki neko series. Distinctive technique: mori-e (盛り絵 raised-line slip) accents over overglaze enamel. Not a coin bank — hollow base only, no money slot.
