Kutani Yoshidaya yunomi

This approximately 220 ml Kutani yunomi is hand-painted in the Yoshidaya palette. A saturated yellow reserve frames mountain cherry blossom and a small bird in blue and pink, set against a grey-speckled stoneware body. The foot carries a red cursive workshop or painter’s seal.

Mountain cherry and the Yoshidaya palette

The painted reserve shows yama-zakura (mountain cherry) with spring leaves and a perched bird, a flower-and-bird composition known as kachō-e. Brushwork and colour placement may vary slightly from piece to piece because the decoration is applied by hand.

Yoshidaya-style Kutani takes its name from the short-lived nineteenth-century revival kiln founded by Yoshidaya Den’emon. Its modern descendants are recognised by saturated overglaze colour, especially yellow and green, used over ceramic bodies rather than the open white ground common in other Kutani styles.

In use

The handleless form is made to be held around the body or cradled in both hands. Its size suits sencha, hōjicha, genmaicha, kukicha, barley tea, or warm water, with enough room for a relaxed everyday pour.

Box and related mug

The yunomi arrives in a protective paper box. The same mountain-cherry-and-bird composition is also available as a handled mug by the same painter’s series.
