Studio Yuzuriha Banko donabe, 9-gō

This 9-gō donabe by Studio Yuzuriha combines a matte-black Banko clay body with a hand-painted porcelain lid. Pink, white, and yellow rose blooms and small flower clusters sit on the jade-green Ryokusai Rose ground, painted in raised brushwork that stands slightly off the glaze. The body is made for cooking; the decorated lid does the work of a centerpiece, staying on the table between servings. The series name, Kazoku Danran, means a family gathered around, and the wide, shallow shape says the same thing.

Workshop: Studio Yuzuriha (工房ゆずりは), a line of Rigyou Co., Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture
Ware: Banko-yaki
Body: earthenware with matte-black exterior, glazed black interior, and softly curved handles
Lid: hand-painted porcelain, raised floral brushwork
Size: 9-gō catalog size

Dimensions

  • Body: approximately 28 cm diameter × 10.4 cm high (11.0 × 4.1 in)
  • Lid: approximately 26 cm diameter (10.2 in)
  • Serves: 4–5 people (wide, shallow table-cooking form)
  • Capacity: not published by the maker; 9-gō is a size class rather than a precise volume

For stove-to-table cooking

Use the donabe for nabemono, sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, mizutaki, oden, rice porridge, and other gently simmered dishes. The wide, shallow shape is the classic table form, made for guests reaching into one pot while it simmers. The glossy interior is easy to read while cooking, while the unglazed foot must be kept dry before heating and storage.

Heat sources and care

  • Gas flame: yes
  • Induction (IH): no
  • Microwave: no
  • Dishwasher: no

Before first use, follow the included Rigyou care card and season the pot with a thin rice-starch slurry: approximately three cups of water to one tablespoon of rice flour, brought to a low simmer until thickened. Let the pot cool, wash gently, and dry the unglazed foot completely. Place a hot donabe on a trivet rather than a cold counter. Treat the raised hand-painted pattern gently.

Box

The pot includes its Studio Yuzuriha box and Japanese-language Rigyou care card. Contact us if you need an English translation of the first-use instructions. For a deeper family pot, see Yuzuriha’s coral pink daisy 8-gō donabe, sized for 3–4 people.
