Camellias that bloom through winter, painted on lapis blue. This Arita–Hasami tea set pairs a 410 ml kyusu teapot — with a built-in strainer for loose-leaf brewing — with two sencha cups, each hand-painted with white and red camellias (tsubaki) on a deep ruri lapis-blue glaze. The pattern's name, 釉彩椿 Yūsai Tsubaki, means "glaze-color camellia."

In Japan the camellia is an auspicious flower: it blooms upright through the harshest weeks of winter, a quiet symbol of endurance and vitality. Each blossom is brushed by hand, so no two sets carry exactly the same flowers.

• Made by Craft Nanpu / Arita and Hasami ware in Saga and Nagasaki Prefectures, Japan, curated by ZenKiln

Care instructions

Microwave and dishwasher use are approved by the maker. To keep the hand-painted camellias vivid for years, we still suggest gentle hand-washing when convenient.

Rinse the teapot well after use and let the built-in strainer area dry thoroughly. One honest note from the maker: the outer base is left unglazed by necessity of the firing process, so slight darkening may appear there over time — a normal trait of this ware.

Because each piece is hand-painted, slight differences in brushwork, color, and glaze tone are part of its individual character.
