Honkin hanazume Kutani cup and saucer

Dense flowers cover the exterior of this Kutani porcelain cup, set against a gold ground with fine gilded lines filling the spaces between petals and leaves. The gilding is honkin — real gold, or pure/24-karat-grade gold overglaze. Raised white chrysanthemums add relief among the coloured blossoms.

The loop handle is fully covered in gold overglaze; it is not a solid-gold metal handle. The saucer remains white with a narrow gold rim, keeping the denser decoration on the cup. Both pieces carry the same red three-character seal, although the kiln name has not been confidently identified.

Care

Hand wash with mild detergent and dry thoroughly. Do not use in a microwave or dishwasher. Avoid bleach, abrasives, and scrubbing over the painted or gold surfaces. Individually decorated pieces may differ slightly in brushwork, glaze tone, and floral placement.
