Eight bowls, eight designs

Eight square porcelain kobachi, no two decorated alike: a green-and-white checker, a cobalt zigzag, a scatter of red dots, brown brush lines drawn down pale celadon. The painting goes on under the glaze and is fired in, sealed into the surface rather than sitting on top of it.

Made by Ninpō (仁峰) in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Mino ware.

Presented four across and two deep in a divided paulownia box, lid lettered 和モダン 八客小鉢揃 with the Ninpō name and a red seal. Kiribako is the traditional Japanese box for storing ceramics, so the set arrives ready to give and ready to keep. A set of eight is the traditional Japanese format for a celebration return-gift, which makes it a natural wedding, housewarming or hostess piece.

Each bowl holds about 100 ml. They suit dipping sauces, tsukemono, otsumami, condiments, dressings, or individual appetizer portions.

Care instructions

Microwave: suitable for reheating only, as confirmed by the maker.
Dishwasher: suitable, as confirmed by the maker.
The patterns are painted under the glaze and fired in, so they sit inside the surface rather than on it.
Because each piece is painted and glazed by hand, expect small differences between bowls and from the photographs: iron specks, uneven colour, a run in the glaze, a pinhole, a slight warp. The maker records these as normal for the material, not as faults.
Keep the paulownia box dry; avoid moisture and direct sunlight.
