Tokukō Arita Imari cup and saucer

This 150 ml cup and saucer by Tokukō places gold kinrande decoration over a deep cobalt-blue sometsuke ground. Repeated chrysanthemum rosettes circle the cup and saucer, joined by gold karakusa vines. The eight-lobed rim carries petal-shaped cartouches, fine white raised dots, and a narrow gold line.

Blue-ground kinrande

The cobalt ground is fired beneath the glaze; the gold and white raised details are added as overglaze decoration. This layering gives the blue-ground set a different depth from its red aka-e counterpart while keeping the same kikka-mon chrysanthemum pattern.

Chrysanthemums have a long association with the Japanese imperial house and are also used as seasonal emblems of autumn and longevity. The continuous karakusa vine links the individual rosettes around the form.

Capacity and use

The 150 ml cup suits espresso, lungo, macchiato, or a small serving of black tea. The saucer leaves room for wagashi or another small sweet.

The set arrives in Tokukō’s branded navy keshōbako with its maker materials. A matching red-ground Tokukō cup and saucer has the same dimensions—9 × 6.5 cm cup, 15 cm saucer, and 150 ml capacity—and uses vermilion aka-e beneath the gold.
