Arita Imari cup and saucer with shikunshi panels

This approximately 200 ml porcelain cup and saucer is arranged in alternating vermilion and white reserves. The red shu-dami panels carry a fine plum-blossom diaper, while the white panels are painted with shikunshi—plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum—and a small blue bird.

The saucer repeats the same four-part composition. Cobalt underglaze, red and polychrome overglaze enamels build the pattern without gold, keeping the contrast focused on the saturated red ground and white reserves.
