Kutani Kayō Cloud Sea Crane vase
Five white cranes cross bands of gold-cream, teal, and cobalt on this rounded Kutani vase by Kutani Kayō. The Unkai-Tsuru, or “Cloud Sea Cranes,” composition wraps around a globular body with two small shoulder knobs and a narrow mouth.
A pearlescent silver overglaze forms the base of the colour field. Airbrushed mineral colour, stencil-resist crane silhouettes, and gold accents build the layered surface, while a red Kutani Sōdō seal appears at the foot.
Kiln: Kutani Kayō (九谷華窯)
Painter: Kutani Sōdō (九谷草堂)
Ware: Kutani-yaki ceramic, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan
Dimensions: approximately 22 cm diameter × 19.5 cm high
Included: carved black display stand and wooden presentation box
Display
The rounded form works as a centrepiece on its stand or with a restrained branch arrangement. The available maker information does not specify whether the vase is watertight. For fresh flowers, use a waterproof inner vessel.

Packaging & gifting
Presented in a paulownia-style kiribako wooden gift box with hand-brushed calligraphic lid label (花瓶 + 九谷草堂 painter signature + 九谷華窯 kiln seal + 九谷焼 official seal + gold 九谷焼登録商標 registered-trademark sticker). Includes a carved black-lacquered wooden display stand.
This vase is a high-tier presentation gift — wedding, milestone anniversary, retirement, milestone birthday (還暦 60 / 古希 70 / 喜寿 77 / 傘寿 80 in the Japanese tradition), corporate appreciation, or major housewarming. The crane motif and the celestial-ascension imagery make this particularly fitting for life-milestone occasions where longevity wishes are appropriate.
Care instructions
Care instructions
Display piece — handle with cotton gloves; wipe the exterior gently with a soft dry cloth to remove dust.
Do not use damp cloths or any cleaning agents on the gin-sai (銀彩) silver overglaze — it is sensitive to abrasion and prolonged moisture.
The interior may be rinsed with cool water if used as a working vase; dry the interior fully before storing.
Slight variations in the airbrush gradient and crane placement are part of each piece's individual character — this is one-by-one hand-decoration, not factory print.
Avoid prolonged sunlight (which can fade the airbrush color over years) and sudden temperature changes.
