Kōzan Kutani chawan with leaping rabbits

This stoneware matcha bowl by Kōzan Kiln is decorated with three raised white rabbits moving beneath a gold moon and windblown susuki grass. The restrained palette sits over a mouse-grey ash glaze, where iron-rich firing flecks remain visible across the surface.

The bowl is hand-thrown, with a reddish-brown firing line at the foot and small variations in form and painted detail. A gold-transfer 九谷 幸山 seal on the foot identifies the Kōzan workshop.

Maker: Kōzan Kiln (幸山), Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan
Ware: Kutani-yaki stoneware
Pattern: Hane-usagi, leaping rabbits
Decoration: raised white painting with gold accents
Dimensions: approximately 11 cm diameter × 6.8 cm high
Vessel capacity: approximately 300 ml; a practical matcha serving is about 100–150 ml
Production year: 2023

For whisked matcha

The open interior gives a bamboo chasen room to move. The bowl may also be used for a small serving of sweets or food, but its proportions are first suited to preparing and drinking matcha.

Packaging & gifting

Original wooden gift box (kibako) with sumi-brush calligraphic lid + red rakkan seal + 2 Kutani info inserts — gift-ready as received.

Care instructions

Hand-wash only with mild soap and a soft sponge or chakin cloth; rinse and dry completely before storing.

Not dishwasher safe; not microwave safe (the gold-leaf kinsai is heat-sensitive).

Store in the original kibako for protection.

Whisk matcha with a wooden chasen (not metal) to preserve the glaze; the rim is hand-formed stoneware.
