A pair of mejiro, the small green Japanese white-eyes you see at plum-blossom time, perched in Kutani colour on a white porcelain pot. Everyday tea, however you take it: green, black, oolong, or a herbal blend, with a lift-out stainless steel strainer for loose leaf of any kind.

Made by Seikou Kiln, one of the established names of Kutani ware in Ishikawa, in the region's overglaze colour-porcelain tradition. It holds 350 ml, two or three cups, and because the colour is set piece by piece, each pot varies a little from the next. A considered gift for a tea lover, a new home, a birthday, or a retirement. To protect the overglaze colour, hand wash and skip the dishwasher.
