This calico Kutani porcelain cat by Chōhō Kiln holds a red tai, or sea bream, and raises its right paw. Raised decoration follows the fish’s scales and fins, with cherry blossoms and gold-coloured accents around the cat.

Sea bream is a familiar symbol of celebration in Japan: tai echoes medetai, meaning auspicious. The raised right paw is traditionally associated with financial good fortune.

Small differences in the painted details may occur from piece to piece.
