On a hot day, pour cold sake into this blue cup and watch what the glass does. The deep blue reads like cool water, the gold leaf catches the light, and the sake sits somewhere in between. Its name, suzumi-zake, means sake to cool off with in summer.

Edo glass (Edo Garasu), a Tokyo craft designated a traditional craft by Japan's METI, blown by hand on a rod in the old Edo manner. Made by Toyo Sasaki Glass on its Yachiyo line: crystal glass, deep blue with gold leaf, 85 ml, the “cooling sake” cup from a four-season series. Because each is blown by hand, the colour and gold settle a little differently on every one. A considered gift for a father, a sake lover, or a home bar.
